La più bella Pediatria del mondo

For a child, the hospital can become a difficult place to live, full of fears, waiting, and being separated from daily routine. What would happen, though, if we could transform it into a welcoming place full of colors, stories, and places to explore, where they could feel a little at home, again?

Out of this idea was born the project “La più bella Pediatria del mondo” that gave life to La Città dei Bambini, the new pediatrics area of the Padiglione Sforza of the Policlinico di Milano. Planned by the architect and designer Fabio Novembre, the project is supported by the Fondazione G. e D. De Marchi ETS thanks to precious contributions by companies, banks, foundations, and private donations.

An innovative environment on three floors facing a hanging garden, the spaces were designed to accompany little patients and their families during their hospital care journey thanks to an approach that unites medicine, architecture, and attention to psychological well-being.

La Città dei Bambini was born out of the idea that a hospital can be more than a place for treatment. It can become a space to live, while staying tied to normalcy even in the most difficult moments.

The corridors become streets, while the patients’ small rooms can be personalized, and the common spaces are areas for meeting and sharing. There are play areas, a room for studying, green spaces with vertical gardens, and rooms dedicated to families because treatment involves not just the children, but also those who are at their sides.

Every detail was designed to create as serene and reassuring an experience as possible, from the colors studied to favor positive emotions and the illustrations capable of speaking to children of all ages to the interactive technologies that offer moments of distraction and creativity.

In this way, the beauty of the spaces becomes an integral part of the treatment. A welcoming environment can contribute to reducing anxiety and stress, encouraging a better experience of the hospital stay.

Parents also find spaces designed for them, here: areas of comfort and places to continue – whenever possible – their daily activities. In this way, La Città dei Bambini becomes a place open to the community, able to welcome little patients and their families.

The Fondazione Prossimo Mio supports this important project with a donation dedicated to the realization of an immersive environment in the new CAT scan room, currently being constructed.

The objective is to transform even this moment often lived with fear into a more calm and positive experience thanks to a space able to accompany children with images, stimuli, and settings designed for them.
